When you’re planning a move, there’s enough to worry about. Why add the stress of hiring the wrong movers to your list? If you’re planning to hire someone to move you from one home to another, check out these four tips to help you make the right choice.
Get recommendations: Find out which movers your family and friends would (and would not) recommend. Your real estate agent may also be able to recommend someone to you. You can also find a list of recommended companies at the American Moving and Storage Association website.
Do your research: Research the companies your friends recommend online. Look for online reviews and ratings of the company at the Better Business Bureau. Is the company a member of trade organizations like the American Moving and Storage Association? Do they list their Department of Transportation license numbers on their websites and advertising?
Get estimates: Reputable moving companies will come to your home and do a thorough walkthrough before providing you with an estimate. They will ask you lots of questions during the process. Beware of companies who only want to give you a quote online or over the phone.
Don’t pay a large deposit: Reputable companies will not demand a large deposit or payment up front. In fact, many will not ask you to pay for their services until after your move is complete. Be suspicious if you’re being asked to pay a big up-front deposit.
